The Fundamentals and Practical Applications of Sedation Symposium: From Hospital to Dental Office Based Setting

Course Director: Keira P. Mason, MD
Director, Fundamentals of Sedation Symposium: Mark G. Roback, MD

This full-day Introduction to Sedation Outside the OR symposium provides an overview of sedation and is directed toward a multidisciplinary audience that includes physicians, dentists, nurses and trainees.  The morning session “sets the stage” for successful sedation and challenges the participants to consider their goals for sedation and how best to achieve them.  Morning presentations address pediatric-specific anatomic and physiologic considerations, pre-sedation assessment, appropriate monitoring and personnel, and the pharmacology and potential adverse of effects of sedation drugs for both medical and dental providers. Presentations will include case-based discussion to emphasize important points and concepts. The optional Pediatric Airway Workshop provides participants the opportunity to practice “hands-on” airway management techniques on mannequins under the oversight of helpful, expert instructors. Afternoon sessions will include a discussion of sedation drug interactions, the importance of addressing patient pain and non-pharmacologic strategies designed to improve the patient experience. Case scenarios will be presented with the intent to foster vigorous discussion of options for sedation and best practice models. The day will reach a conclusion with interactive educational videos in Hospital-based and Dental Pediatric Procedural Sedation. These interactive video simulations are designed to provide medical and dental participants the opportunity to directly observe the application of sedation outside the OR and raise questions regarding best practice.   The simulations will emphasize the principles and skills presented during the symposium and allow participants the opportunity to reinforce their knowledge and understanding of the day’s curriculum.
